Pop star Justin Timberlake is back with new music. After weeks of speculation and teasing, Timberlake confirmed the release of a new album, “Everything I Thought It Was."
The album’s first single, “Selfish,” was released early Thursday, and is available on all streaming services.
Here’s what we know about Timberlake's new album.
Justin Timberlake 'Everything I Thought It Was' album
"Everything I Thought It Was” marks Timberlake’s sixth solo release and his first new music since 2018’s “Man of the Woods.” The announcement comes just before the singer turns 43 on Jan. 31, and looks to be a musical return to form following the middling reception for "Man of the Woods." Timberlake looks to get back to his peak creative and commercial form, which has included hits like the 2006 chart-topper "SexyBack" and "Can't Stop the Feeling!," from the 2016 animated film, "Trolls."
When will 'Everything I Thought It Was' be released?
The record will be released by RCA on March 15.
First single 'Selfish' released, along with video
The album’s first single, “Selfish,” is out now. A video for the single, also posted Thursday, was directed by Bradley J. Calder, whose credits include clips for SZA and Tinashe.
As the press release touting the video teases, it “brings the introspectiveness of the song to life by pulling back the curtain on the production process and blending the line between performance and reality. It’s a raw and honest portrayal of Justin as an artist and person.”
Who produced the new album?
So far, full details on the album’s credits have not been released. It had been reported that Timberlake’s longtime collaborator Timbaland had worked on a number of tracks on the new record. However, the only confirmed credits for the record are for “Selfish,” which was written by Timberlake, Louis Bell (Taylor Swift, Post Malone), Cirkut (Maroon 5, The Weeknd), Theron Thomas, Amy Allen and produced by Timberlake, Louis Bell and Cirkut.
Is Justin Timberlake going on tour?
The formal announcement of the LP release was not accompanied by news of a support tour by Timberlake. But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. As part of the promotion of his last record, “Man of the Woods,” Timberlake toured behind the project for much of 2018-2019 playing some 115 shows.
After playing a free intimate promo show in his hometown of Memphis last week, Timberlake is set for another rare theater gig at New York City’s Irving Plaza on Jan. 31. In addition to that, Timberlake will appear as a guest on Thursday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and will serve as the musical guest on this weekend’s edition of “Saturday Night Live.”
